The comfort in routine
As s creature of habit, I struggle with disruptions to my routine. My family knows I have no problem eating sandwiches for several meals in a row, wearing the same worn out clothes, or listening to the same songs. I find comfort in routine, it's good to know what is going to happen next.
Life is not always that way of course. The hardships of life have a way of taking our expectations and throwing them right out the door. Sometimes the change comes so quickly, like a tragedy, so that we can't even see it coming to prepare ourselves. Sometimes we see it coming slowly down the horizon but still can't do anything to stop it, like age and getting older.
The truth is that every routine was new at some point. Everything that I hold dear to me right now at some point was done for the first time. But telling yourself change is inevitable does nott always make it easier.
That's why I find such comfort in the verse from Hebrews13:8 that says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. “ Change will always come and disrupt my life, some of it good and some of it bad. But I don't find comfort in the fact that my life never changes. My comfort and hope is in the fact that God never changes. Even when my routine or expectations get thrown out the window, God is the same.
I don't know what your routine looks like these days, if you are settled comfortably in, or if you're facing something different. Regardless of what your future holds, you can be certain that God is the same in the good and the bad. Finding hope in Christ is the one routine you can always count on, because you know he is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
