Staying in touch with God
As I rolled down the back highways of Oklahoma last week, there was not much to see across the endless plains. Except for one thing, these telephone poles that seemed to stretch from one end of forever to the other. In between the empty fields, pastures, cattle, and the occasional house, these poles are a testament to mans ingenuity and desire to stay connected to each other.
Human beings will go to great lengths to stay connected. A motivating factor in many technologies is a push for people to communicate more easily. The telegraph, the phone, text messaging, and video chat are all examples. We go to great lengths and great expense to be able to talk and communicate with our loved ones. Even in the days when we had to wait months for a letter to cross the ocean, we valued every word and letter from those we love.
The Bible tells us that God has gone to great lengths to communicate with us as well. His love for us is greater than any other love, and he wants us to know him. Through the Bible we have a record of God, his work for us, his love for us, and we should treasure every word. After traveling thousands of years and thousands of miles to reach us, we far too often let the word of God sit neglected on our shelves.
If the written record of God were not enough, God went to further lengths by sending us his son Jesus. Jesus is called the “Word” by the Apostle John, and is the perfect illustration of God’s love for us. He spared no expense, even the life of his son, to ensure that we got the message that he loves us. He went to great lengths, literally to death and back, to show us that the love of God has no limits.
We need to stay in touch with our loved ones. We have telephone poles, satellites, video chat, and even pen and paper for that. But we don’t need to forget to be in touch with the word of God every day through the Bible and through our relationship with Jesus Christ. He came from heaven to earth to speak to us, and we need to make the effort to stay close to him. Pick up your Bible, go to church, worship and sing, be in community with others. God has spoken to us through his word and through his Son. Are you listening?
