Never Changing
If you don’t like the weather in OK, just wait.
That’s the old saying attributed to Will Rogers, among others, and it’s held recently as the weather keeps on it’s rollercoaster. Around here we are used to 30-40 degree swings in a week (or a day), and have learned to prepare accordingly.
Change is a constant in everyone’s life, and even if you try to resist it, you can’t stop things like the weather, the season, and the years from rolling on by. Even we ourselves change over time, as the mirror reveals to us all. That’s why it’s so striking when God tells Malachi “I am the Lord, I do not change. ”
We are so used to everything changing around us, like the weather and people, that it’s hard for us to believe that God never changes. But this applies not just to his demeanor or nature, but even his feelings towards us. Scripture says that his word abides forever and that “the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. ” Even though the world around us might change, we can know that God never changes how he feels towards us.
We can hold onto this certainty in the middle of the serverest life changes. Scripture goes so far to say in James that there isn’t even a shadow of a change within Christ. In a world where people are constantly trying to “reinvent” themselves and make a new statement, Christ is as kind, faithful and good as he always was. Christ loves you today as much as he ever has and ever will, no matter how your week was.
The weather will no doubt keep changing, as will you and I. Your circumstances might get better or worse this week, and the days and years will roll on and on. In the midst of all of that, remember that Christ never will. His mercies will never come to an end. No matter what happens today, this gives us “strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. ” Great is his faithfulness
