Aroma of Christ
On our way back from out of town we stopped at a very small town gas station for a child to use the bathroom. They were in there less than a minute, but when they came out they had that unmistakeable smell of fried food all over them. Amazing how you can pick up an aroma without even being around very long! We just rolled the windows down and the smell dissipated pretty quickly, but the lesson stuck with me.
In Second Corinthians 2 Paul tells us that we are to be "the aroma of Christ." Meaning, the way we live our lives should put off an aroma that draws people to Christ. Sadly I think too many of us smell like the world and not like Christ. If you can smell like that after only one minute in a gas station, what kind of aroma do you get after spending hours on social media, watching TV, or consumed with the things of the world?
The aroma of Christ is not a fragrance you can spray on when you want to smell nice. It's something you can only gain by spending time with him. The more time you spend with the world, the more you will develop the aroma that draws people to him. Make sure you spend more time with Christ, and with God's word, then you do with the world. Because people can tell with a quick sniff where our hearts and minds have been.
